About the Book
When we embark on a journey, we carry with us who we are˜including traits such as honor, integrity, and patriotism; but we also bring along our less desirable characteristics such as rage, guilt, and fear. Jack Lyndon Thomas has written a book titled Coyote Jack-Drawing Meaning from Life and Vietnam: A Memoir, which details the person he was before, during, and after the war in Vietnam. More than just a memoir of his wartime experience, he takes a philosophical and spiritual view of the way survival experiences affect different individuals, vividly describing the commonalities and differences in the people he knew during the years he spent at war. Thomas was an infantry lieutenant, a member of an advisory unit that lived with the indigenous population, and, therefore, brings a unique perspective to the Vietnam experience. His conflicting feelings, including unresolved issues with his father, followed him long after the war. From this complex mesh of emotions is distilled a profound and intensely readable book.

Coyote Jack is a coming of age tale that recreates the turbulent politics and uncertainty of the Vietnam era. Legions of young men marched into war as children, and returned from war aged beyond their years. Vietnam was unique in that it was the first war in which a combatant was in a remote rice field in the morning, then after a quick jet flight was back home in the United States.

Although the lens of time tends to distort memories and experiences, Coyote Jack provides a gripping realism as seen through the eyes of a person who was there. The intensity of Jack Lyndon Thomas' experience is faithfully captured in his story, a story that should not be missed.
